No.1 Westfield Beats No.8 Longmeadow 1-0 In The Class A Quarterfinals. Josh Mayo Struck Out 13!!

Josh Mayo struck out 13, and No.1 Westfield 1-0 blanked No.8 Longmeadow in the first quarterfinal of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association baseball tournament at Worcester State University on Saturday. Mayo struck out 10 in a complete-game effort as Westfield improved to 23-2 and advanced to face top-seeded Hopkinton in a semifinal at 4 pm today.

Westfield pitcher Josh Mayo has a 0.36 ERA with 12 shutouts this season and has 105 strikeouts in 65 innings pitched; he also is batting .474 with 15 RBIs and five home runs. “It’s been incredible,” said Mayo. “I don’t know what else to say.” Mayo walked four batters but didn’t allow a hit until the fifth inning when senior second baseman Aaron Foster smacked a double into left field with two outs, plating senior third baseman Matt Rocha from first base with the game’s only run. “I’m just trying to get ahead on them,” said Mayo, who threw 80 pitches (50 strikes). “That was my focus today.”

On Wednesday, top-ranked Westfield travelled to Longmeadow for a Class A baseball quarterfinal game. The Eagles took an early lead and held on for a 1-0 victory. Westfield pitcher Josh Mayo struck out 13 batters and allowed just one hit over six innings. The Eagles took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jack Gaudreau doubled home Chase Gaudreau. Longmeadow’s best chance came in the top of the seventh inning when they loaded the bases with two outs. Westfield coach Tom Walsh said he didn’t want to walk anyone or let them get on base at that point, so he went with his best reliever Josh Mayo who got out of the jam by striking out two straight batters for his third strikeout of the night. Mayo also had three strikeouts in his last two appearances and four total against Glastonbury back on May 11 (his previous high).

 The Westfield High School baseball team has been on fire lately, and the Warriors’ bats were again ablaze Thursday night. In a Class A baseball quarterfinal, No.1 Westfield (20-1) defeated No.8 Longmeadow (16-6) 1-0. Josh Mayo was the winning pitcher for Westfield as he struck out 13 batters and walked none in 7.2 innings of work. The only run scored came on an RBI single by Matt Norton in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Westfield will advance to face top-seeded Millis/Hopedale in their semifinal game on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Fitton Field in Worcester. Westfield got a 1-0 shutout victory over eighth-seeded Longmeadow in the Class A state tournament quarterfinals before a crowd of about 550 at Danbury High’s Harry Mavromatis Field.

Conclusion

The Warriors, who had beaten Longmeadow, 12-1, on April 30 in their regular-season finale, improved to 20-5 overall this spring. Westfield will face No. 4 St. Joseph’s in Friday’s semifinals at 6 pm at Palmer Field on the campus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain. That game will be broadcast live by WTIC 1080 AM radio and live-streamed online. The winner advances to Saturday’s final at 1 pm at Palmer Field.
