Bolsonaro sanctions floor for nursing, but vetoes automatic readjustment
The president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) sanctioned this Thursday (4) the national salary floor for nurses, nursing technicians, nursing assistants and midwives. In the case of the former, the floor will be R$ 4,750. For technicians, the amount must correspond to 70% of this mark (R$ 3,325), while assistants and midwives will be entitled to 50% (R$ 2,375).
O bill (PL) 2564/20 was approved by the National Congress last month. The institution of the salary level was a historic struggle of the category, which represents about 2.6 million workers.
“Today is a very important day, not only for Brazilian nursing, but for public health in Brazil. There is no public health without our nursing”, stated the Minister of Health, Marcelo Queiroga. According to the minister, for reasons of constitutionality, the president vetoed one of the articles of the PL, which determined an annual readjustment of the new floor based on the National Consumer Price Index (INPC), one of the inflation indicators.
According to the president of the Federal Nursing Council (Cofen), Betânia Maria Pereira dos Santos, more than 80% of the category receives values below the new floor, which is now law. “There is infinite precariousness in relation to nursing salaries. Now, by law, we will have a floor, it is the minimum”, she said, after the ceremony.
To enable the approval of the national nursing floor, the National Congress enacted a constitutional amendment to give legal certainty to the project, inserting the theme in the Federal Constitution. After that, the bill that effectively establishes the new values was approved with the approval of the vast majority of party leaders and benches. With information from Agência Brasil.
